John Nolen was a leader of America's pioneering landscape architects and urban planners in the early 20th century. Civic by Design: John Nolen's Lessons and the New Urbanism shows how Nolen's principles of design and landscape are being applied today. The challenge was to clearly show which designs and images belonged to Nolen's work, and which are contemporary. Color fields behind the text about Nolen was the answer. An additional challenge was to arrange the two threads so that individual pages and spreads told their own stories. We also wanted to capture some of Nolen's principles of design in the design of the book.
